I have often written about trying new subjects for my paintings. I have heard of painter’s block, but because my artwork is so diverse in subject and medium, I always feel like I am several steps behind in what I would like to try. Many people have told me to stick to one style, medium and subject matter to “get known” but I would rather be diverse and grow! What I learn from painting in one style translates over to another style, sometimes in interesting ways. Besides, I am an eclectic person, so my “style” is diverse.

“Wave Runner” is a new painting where I am using the ocean as the backdrop. Since I live in Wisconsin, I have to rely on photos for reference that I have taken in south Florida when we visit our youngest son. I have painted several fishermen in water, and plan to do more, but with the Woodson Art Museum’s “Birds in Art” deadline in April fast approaching [well, at least for me it seems fast] I have been trying several new approaches with birds as the subject. This highly competitive international exhibition makes me push myself beyond what I think that I can do.

When entering a competition, I try to think of what the judges will look for. Is my composition strong, do my colors complement the subject matter, is my painting created in a painterly manner? In other words, have I created “ART”? Actually, there is a long list in my head of things that I try to follow when creating art. However, the most important thing to me is making something that nobody else has thought of. Originality is the one thing that I strive for the most when I paint.

Break out of your normal routine and boldly create! You never know, you just might find yourself on a new track. Remember, imagination amplifies, reality clarifies.
