What must we provide on the land for wildlife to thrive?
Much of the land in the countryside supports a low concentration of songbirds, game species and butterflies. The cause is the lack one or more of the essential elements for survival. Not only must the elements be present, but they also must exist in the correct ratios and must be arranged on the land in the proper proximity for wild creatures to survive.
The essential elements are cover, food and water. For wildlife to exist in any numbers all three must be present. Neither is a substitute for another.
We will manage and control those elements on our land, observe the results, adjust our actions and over time learn by trial and error the landscape characteristics that support the maximum number and variety of wild creatures.
Beauty is integral to the process. The land, the wild creatures and the light will be described. No prediction will be made about the success of that effort for as William Shakespeare stated:
“For we, which now behold these present days,
Have eyes to wonder but lack tongues to praise.”
Sonnets, CVI.
